Loyal companion and Wayne County’s resident therapy dog, Kenya Atkins, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2019 with his family by his side. A native of St. Marteen, this beloved island dog made his way to the states in 2011 along side his parents Dr. James and Sherry Atkins. Kenya was best known for his time spent at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center as a pet therapy dog where he could be found visiting patients in exam rooms and the chemotherapy suite, taking a quick nap in the hallway, or playing with his two younger brothers Mick and Bowie. His compassion for patients, fluency in French, and calming demeanor made his presence unforgettable. “Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us everyday…unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.”
